APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS & FAQ
Prospective students interested in applying to our PhD or Masters programs are strongly encouraged to directly contact faculty members with whom they are interested to work prior to beginning the application procedure.
Please select the program that is most appropriate for you:
Master of Arts
- 12 month course-based program culminating in a Major Research Paper (MRP).
- The Master of Arts program in Anthropology is restricted to domestic students — Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents or Protected Persons. However, international students (those requiring a VISA to study in Canada) with exceptionally strong undergraduate backgrounds (ie. GPA of 3.70 or above in their last 5.0 full-course equivalents [FCEs] and who have earned an appropriate bachelor’s degree with a concentration in anthropology or a cognate discipline) may apply directly for admission to the PhD Direct Entry program by indicating this preference on their application form.
- Program Requirements: completion of 3.5 credits* (including the MRP which is normally completed during the summer session)
- The Anthropology Graduate unit offers graduate studies in collaboration with various programs across the university known as Collaborative Specializations.
Master of Science
- Two year program culminating in Major Research Paper (MRP).
- The Master of Science program in Anthropology is restricted to domestic students — Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons. However, international students (those requiring a VISA to study in Canada) with exceptionally strong undergraduate backgrounds (ie. GPA of 3.70 or above in their last 5.0 full-course equivalents [FCEs] and who have earned an appropriate bachelor’s degree with a concentration in anthropology or a cognate discipline) may apply directly for admission to the PhD Direct Entry program by indicating this preference on their application form.
- Program Requirements: completion of 4.5 credits* (including the MRP which is normally completed during the second year).
- The Anthropology Graduate unit offers graduate studies in collaboration with various programs across the university known as Collaborative Specializations.
*Typically 1 course = 0.5 credit and lasts 12 weeks
Regrettably, the department will not be able to consider any applications for admission to the Master’s programs from International (VISA including U.S.) students.
PhD Direct Entry Stream
- Undergraduate students with strong backgrounds in anthropology or relevant disciplines (GPA of 3.70 or above in their last 5.0 full-course equivalents [FCEs]) and who have earned an appropriate bachelor’s degree with a concentration in anthropology or a cognate discipline may apply directly for admission to the PhD program.
- Program Requirements: during years 1-3, PhD Direct students will take at least 5 credits*, satisfy the language requirement and defend a thesis proposal before embarking on fieldwork.
- Fieldwork and dissertation writing normally take 4-7 years.
- The Anthropology Graduate unit offers graduate studies in collaboration with various programs across the university known as Collaborative Specializations.
*Typically 1 course = 0.5 credit and lasts 12 weeks
Applying to a PhD program from an MA/MSc?
PhD Regular Stream
- For students entering with a Master’s degree.
- Program Requirements: during the first two years of the program students will complete at least 3 credits*, satisfy the language requirement and defend a thesis proposal before embarking on fieldwork.
- The Anthropology Graduate unit offers graduate studies in collaboration with various programs across the university known as Collaborative Specializations.
*Typically 1 course = 0.5 credit and lasts 12 weeks
